On 1 January 2023, AHPRA released a revised Registration Standard for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
From January 2024, all registered and practicing doctors will need to have a CPD Home. (There are some exceptions – refer to Registration-standard---Continuing-professional-development found here.) If you are completing specialist training, your College will be your CPD Home. If you are not in a training program, you can use Doctorportal Learning as a FREE CPD tracking and learning portal. Doctorportal Learning is accredited by the AMC as a CPD Home.
What do you need to do when you apply for registration for the first time?
At this stage, you do not need a CPD Home. However, you will need to join a CPD Home by January 2024.
If you are applying for registration for the first time after January 2024, you must provide details of your proposed CPD Home to AHPRA.
What CPD are you required to do during each registration period?
In each calendar year you must:
Meet the requirements of a CPD program of an accredited CPD Home;
Develop a written annual professional development plan;
Complete a minimum of 50 hours per year of CPD activities that are relevant to your scope of practice and individual professional development needs;
Allocate your minimum 50 hours per year between the following types of CPD activities:
At least 12.5 hours (25 per cent of the minimum) in educational activities; and
At least 25 hours (50 per cent of the minimum) in activities focused on reviewing performance and measuring outcomes.
Self-evaluate your CPD activity at the end of the year as you prepare your professional development plan for the next year;
Retain records of your annual CPD activity for audit by your CPD Home and the Board for three years after the end of each one-year cycle.
Your compliance with this standard will be reported to the Board by your CPD Home and may be audited by the Board from time to time.
In summary:
If you have or are planning to apply for registration, you will need a CPD Home by January 2024.
Doctorportal Learning is a free CPD tracking and learning portal. If you are an RACGP member, you can also use RACGP as your CPD Home. RACGP membership has a fee.
If you are in an accredited training program, your College will be your CPD Home.
Every year, you must develop a written professional development plan, complete a minimum of 50 hours of CPD relevant to your scope of practice, and declare to AHPRA that you have complied with this registration standard.
